Colored hair needs extra special care to avoid damage. Here are some basic tips that can be taken to maintain hair color and help the colors remains bright.
Protecting your Hair: Make sure you wear a cap to protect your hair while swimming or wash your hair after getting in the pool. This will minimize the effect of the chlorine in the water. The sun also tends to damage hair. Wear a hat or scarf before stepping outside. A leave in conditioner is also recommended as it contains sunscreen, which protects your hair from the sun’s harmful rays.
Shampooing Hair: Use hair care products that are specifically developed for hair that has been colored. This ensures that your hair is protected that the hair color will stay brighter for a longer period of time. Use a conditioner after each shampoo to restore natural oils and leave the hair looking shiny.
Do not comb your hair when it is wet, as it tends to break more. Use a wide-tooth comb to untangle hair and let it dry naturally. Pat your hair dry instead of rubbing it harshly or tying it up in a towel to avoid further hair damage.
Hair styling: Care must be taken when styling your hair. Avoid excessive heat or styling products. When blow drying your hair, use the hairdryer in the cool mode and never completely dry the hair as it will create static. Only use products that were specifically made for colored hair. If you want to iron your hair, use a leave in conditioner first to form a protective layer over the hair. Do not use lemon or other bleaching agents on your hair.
Once you have styled your hair, apply some conditioner or lotion to the hair to prevent damage. You can perm your hair to add volume and texture to your already colored hair. A special perm for colored hair is available on the market that will not damage your hair. After combing your hair always use a leave in moisturizer or conditioner with sunscreen to protect your hair.
